Dear colleagues,
The summer is coming to a close, and we hope everyone has enjoyed it. Our interns and residents are settling in and adjusting to their new roles.
Outreach and Recruitment
September marks the beginning of our primary recruitment and outreach efforts. This month, Yale School of Medicine (YSM) and Yale New Haven Hospital (YNHH) will send a delegation of faculty and graduate medical education (GME) trainees to the Latino Medical Student Association (LMSA) conference in Chicago. As usual, we will highlight our culture of inclusive excellence, our diverse range of excellent training programs, and our welcoming environment. On September 20, a delegation of faculty and trainees from YSM and YNHH will attend the Meharry Medical College Residency Fair.
In October, the Student National Medical Association's Region VII will hold its annual Regional Medical Education Conference at YSM. The GME office and the Minority Housestaff Organization will support and participate in the events and will send a delegation of faculty and trainees to showcase GME training opportunities at YSM and YNHH.
Also in October, the GME office, in collaboration with the Minority Housestaff Organization (MHO), will host our usual YSM and YNHH virtual Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCU) recruitment event. We will invite program leaders and faculty members to join our trainees in engaging with students from HBCU medical schools, specifically Meharry College of Medicine, Howard University College of Medicine, Morehouse School of Medicine, and the Charles R. Drew University of Medicine and Science. In November, we will host a similar virtual event for medical schools in the Tri-state area.
Retention
The YSM Minority Organization for Retention and Expansion (MORE) will hold its annual welcome event on September 14, with music, dancing, and great food. All faculty, GME trainees, and medical students are welcome.
As a reminder, Christopher Sankey, MD, is offering free coaching services to staff and faculty within the Department of Internal Medicine. If you are interested, please contact Dr. Sankey. Thank you to Dr. Sankey for this generous offer.
We are also arranging a training session for faculty interested in learning about writing op-eds. If you would like to participate, please fill out this survey or contact Cayetana Navarro.
YSM Collaborative Excellence advocates will participate in a retreat in October. Additionally, Carli Gaughf will be moderating a book club session on the book "Calling in" by Loretta J. Ross. I found the book to be compelling and transforming. Please contact Carli if you are interested in joining.
Upcoming Talks
Don’t miss our next Equity Begins with Everyone (EBE) gathering on Monday, September 15, at noon in Fitkin Auditorium and on Zoom. We will hold an “open mic” session for interested speakers, followed by a moderated discussion with the audience. We will continue our theme of sourcing food from different parts of the world. Beginning in October, we will alternate our EBE gatherings between Mondays and Tuesdays to allow more faculty and staff to participate in these important conversations.
Next month, I will be a visiting professor at the Department of Medicine, Queen's University in Canada, where I will deliver grand rounds on the proven impact of a health care workforce that reflects a broad range of backgrounds and experiences. I will also meet with several graduate student groups and teach GME trainees.
I am committed to supporting and expanding the culture and climate of collaborative excellence within the Department of Internal Medicine; please join me in this effort. Together, we strive. Together, we rise.
Respectfully Yours,
Benjamin
